Background

Richard Smith has practiced in South Australia as a barrister and solicitor since 1977. His entire career has been based on insurance law, including; Personal injury, liability, professional indemnity, property classes and recovery actions.

His litigation experience is extensive, appearing on behalf of insurance companies, national and international corporations, both prosecuting and defending civil and commercial claims.

Richard’s principal practice has always involved personal injury claims. Prior to joining Lawson Smith, he had a significant CTP plaintiff practice having been involved in many major claims he has developed a reputation for proactive management of personal injury claims with a focus on early resolution and the use of ADR options.

In professional indemnity matters Richard provides sound counsel and well conceived legal strategy to professionals and their scheme insurers, extending to:

• Protecting professional reputations
• Handling media interest
• Resolving claims economically
• Representing professionals in criminal investigations
• Maintaining public confidence in the profession.

Richard also acts for the liability underwriters of various major shopping centres in South Australia in public liability cases.
